Simply, there is currently insufficient recycling capacity in the UK to cope with the recent rise in waste fridge volumes.
Over the last couple of years the EA has forced closure on a number of sites using outdated recovery technologies. This has been further exacerbated with the temporary closure of two large processors in the last two weeks. At the same time new fridge sales have been unexpectedly strong over the summer and the subsequent impact of additional cooling waste, flowing through retailers and civic amenity sites has added further pressure. This problem has been predicted for some time. Due to the introduction of the amended WEEE Regulations in 2015 there is little incentive for anyone to invest in new fridge recycling capacity. We do not see the law changing any time soon, although WasteCare is doing its utmost to find a solution for its customers both in the short and long term. Increased storage and shipping costs will inevitably result in higher recycling costs. Until a balance in supply and capacity is achieved we are expecting further pinch points in the coming months.
